You have to feel safe in order to enjoy your visit.  Because “L.A.” is portrayed in so many movies & TV shows, some visitors fear that there are drug dealers, armed gang members, or high-speed street racers on every block.  Like other big cities around the world, they do exist in some places, but mainly, L.A. is far more mundane than that.  We live in neighborhoods, we get up, get our kids to school, go to work, and lead normal lives like everybody else. Some visitors have even appeared disappointed that L.A. is generally safe and not “more exciting.”

Still, it is a fact that people feel more comfortable in some areas than others, particularly late at night.  A common-sense rule is “If in doubt, check it out” -- ask somebody.  Most hotels, local police, chambers of commerce, and automobile clubs will be more than happy to answer any questions you have about personal safety or specific locations.  Once you have that information, only you can determine what’s best for you.
